Mahama Appoints Dr. Ron Daniels to Reparatory Justice Council

NAARC Convener joins international council of reparations experts advancing coordinated global action for reparatory justice

NEW YORK — Dr. Ron Daniels, Convener of the National African American Reparations Commission (NAARC) and President of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW21), has been appointed by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, to serve as a member of the

Global Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice.

Established pursuant to the Accra Next Steps conference convened in Accra, Ghana in June of this year, the Council is the highest advisory body created to guide implementation of the commitments and advance the objectives of United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/250 – which declared the trafficking of Africans and racialized chattel enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity. The Council will provide political leadership and strategic direction for the global reparatory justice movement.

The Council will also strengthen transcontinental partnerships between Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America the United States and the Global African Diaspora to promote a unified voice and coordinated international engagement in pursuit of reparatory justice for Africans and people of African descent.

In his appointment letter, President Mahama cited Dr. Daniels’ “distinguished leadership and unwavering commitment to reparatory justice,” noting that his experience will contribute to shaping the strategic direction of the global reparatory justice movement and advancing coordinated international action.

Dr. Daniels has been a leading advocate for reparatory justice in the United States and internationally through his work as Convener of NAARC and President of IBW21. Dr. Daniels is also a Member of the Steering Committee of the Global Circle for Reparations and Healing.

The National African American Reparations Commission (NAARC) is an assembly of distinguished reparations advocates, scholar/activists, civil rights, human rights, labor and faith leaders who constitute an authoritative body that has established a 10 Point Reparations Plan to serve as a reference point and guide for the growing reparatory justice movement in the USA. NAARC has foundational and synergistic relationship with the CARICOM Reparations Commission.
