ILO and Indonesian TV Journalist Association Launch Occupational Safety and Health Guidebook

JAKARTA (joint press release) – The International Labour Organization (ILO) together with the Indonesian Television Journalists Association (IJTI) held a book launching event titled “Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Guidebook for TV Journalists and Workers” in Jakarta (5/7). The book is part of the effort to the implementation of ILO’s fundamental pillars on the protection of workers’ health and safety in the workplace.

The launch event attended by Usman Kansong, Director General of Information and Public Media Communication, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo); Azyumardi Azra, Chairman of the Press Council; Masato Usui, Minister for Economics and Development, Embassy of Japan in Indonesia; Michiko Miyamoto, ILO Director for Indonesia and Timor-Leste; and Herik Kurniawan, Chairman of IJTI.

This handbook provides practical guidance and advice for journalists and workers in the television media industry to identify, reduce and control risks that can lead to occupational injury or illness. This book promotes a preventive culture in occupational safety and health (OSH) for business actors and workers in the television industry with their dynamic profession – doubled by the COVID-19 outbreak which has also accelerated digital transformation and dramatically affected the dynamics of work, livelihoods and welfare. all workers in the world.

ILO Country Director for Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Michiko Miyamoto, said that the book is an advocacy tool to promote OSH principles in the television industry where OSH is now also part of the fundamental principles and rights at work. This has been adopted at the International Labour Conference where all ILO Member States, including Indonesia, commit to respect and promote the fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment.

“ Through this book, we ensure that business actors and workers in television industry can understand and promote OSH in their workplace. This book does not only discuss what needs to be done, but focuses on how to implement effective OSH from the top management to the workers level,” she emphasized.

Chairman of IJTI, Herik Kurniawan added that this guidebook will be used as a reference for television journalists, television media workers and television companies in minimizing the risk of work accidents and of course requires support from all policy makers in the television media industry.

“ With this guide, it is hoped that all television journalists in the country can be more aware to understand the importance of OSH, as well as policy makers in the television media to have a commitment to create a safe and healthy work environment,” said Herik Kurniawan.

Nursodik Gunarjo, Director of Media Management from the Ministry of Communication and Information also welcomed the publication of the guidebook to fill the regulatory void related to OSH in the television industry.

“ I hope there will be tangible benefits from this guidebook which covers all upstream, middle and downstream levels. I hope Indonesian journalists and television media workers in the future can work healthily, safely and of course more productively,” said Nursodik Gunarjo.

Concisely packaged, this book covers the OSH aspects of journalists and workers in television industry, potential risks, mitigation efforts, OSH risk assessment, safety management practices, social inclusion and prevention of gender-based violence, bipartite consultancy institutions for OSH at the organization level, key elements of OSH implementation, and also OSH preparation checklist for activities in the pre-production, production, post-production and presenting.

This guidebook is developed by ILO’s Enhancing COVID-19 Prevention at and through Workplaces project funded by the Government of Japan to encourage the improvement of OSH and business continuity during the pandemic.
