Churches, trade unions and community groups across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique have joined a citizen-led effort supporting humanitarian assistance for Cuba.

A broad-based solidarity campaign in Grenada has mobilized churches, trade unions, community organizations and residents to raise funds and humanitarian support for Cuba. Launched in April under the theme “Grateful Grenada Gives Back to Cuba,” the initiative reflects longstanding ties between the two Caribbean nations and Grenadian organizers’ desire to respond to Cuba’s current economic and humanitarian difficulties.

In Brief

  • The citizen-led initiative began April 14, coinciding with the 47th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Grenada and Cuba.
  • Fundraising activities have taken place throughout Grenada as well as Carriacou and Petite Martinique, involving churches, trade unions and community organizations.
  • Organizers reported that the Cuba Solidarity Fund had surpassed $200,000 by July 15, with additional contributions still being collected.
  • Catholic and Seventh-day Adventist congregations were among the largest contributors, while dinners, concerts, breakfasts, raffles and other community events also generated support.
  • Organizers have connected the campaign to Cuba’s decades of assistance to Grenada, including support for the Maurice Bishop International Airport, university scholarships and medical services.
  • The campaign’s organizers said the effort is intended to provide humanitarian assistance while expressing gratitude for the longstanding relationship between Grenada and Cuba
