Galmudug regional forces claim to have captured Guriel town after a heavy gunfight between the Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a (ASWJ) group on Saturday morning.

State-owned Radio Mogadishu reported that the Galmudug forces recaptured Guriel after a heavy gunfight between Galmudug forces and the ASWJ fighters group erupted.

Reports coming in indicate that ASWJ was led on the ground by leader Shakir still fighting to recapture the city of Guriel.

According to residents, both sides are exchanging heavy weaponry with people fleeing from their homes.

This comes a day after the ASWJ leader warned the government against attacking his group in Guriel.

AWSJ took over Guriel town, some 450 km north of Mogadishu last month.

The group faced no resistance and entered the town peacefully after government forces pulled out without a fight or firing a single shot.

AWSJ  is a Somalia-based paramilitary group consisting of moderate Sufis opposed to radical Salafi groups such as Al-Shabaab.
