Cities in low- and middle-income countries are stepping up their policy commitments for food and climate, reflecting their central importance in the global food system. Yet connections to research, innovations, and practical technical support are weak, and implementation is lacking as a result.

At this event, cities and researchers will showcase positive examples of how science, policy and investment can better synergize to address key urban food system challenges. Under a ‘circular bioeconomy’ theme, speakers will discuss:

  • Food waste reduction
  • Closing rural-urban nutrient loops
  • Safe reuse of urban organic waste and wastewater for food production
  • New approaches to informal food markets and food-smart urban design and planning.
