Earlier this month, USCRI Cleveland had the honor of hosting an event with Ms. Mahbouba Seraj, a leader in advocating for women’s rights and a Nobel Peace Prize Nominee. Ms. Seraj stayed behind after the evacuation of Afghanistan for a year to witness and document the Taliban’s dismantling of women’s rights.
Nadeen Abusada, reporter with News Channel 5 Cleveland, was in conversation with Ms. Seraj and moderated an audience Q&A for the event, Standing with the Women of Afghanistan: An Evening with Mahbouba Seraj. Filling the seats at Cleveland Public Theatre were members of Cleveland’s international community, strategic partners like Global Cleveland, USCRI volunteers, donors, and staff. The discussion ranged from Afghanistan’s internal politics, to the status of Cleveland’s Afghan community, to ideas for promoting women’s liberation across the world. Ms. Seraj also joined the USCRI Cleveland team for an Iftar meal and hosted a separate gathering for the Afghan community. USCRI is grateful to Ms. Seraj for graciously joining us on her brief visit to the U.S. and for inspiring Cleveland’s community to keep fighting for women’s rights.
