Monrovia, Liberia, May 6, 2024 –The Chief Executive Officer of Liberia’s leading mobile (GSM) company, Lonestar Cell MTN, Mr. Rahul De, is rallying stakeholders here to invest in a digital skills training program to build the capacity of Liberian youth and subsequently lead to the country’s growth.

“We encourage more partnerships like the one between MTN and the Government of Liberia (GOL). Together, we can bridge the digital gap”, he said.

The Lonestar Cell MTN CEO made the call recently at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in the oldest Congo town when the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Liberia Telecommunications Authority, and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, launched the national digital skills training program for 10,000 youth.

Making remarks at the ceremony, Mr. De said it is about time to get deeply involved in digital transformation for Liberian youths, saying “Let’s invest in digital literacy and skills training for all Liberians.”

“Today, I stand before you to discuss a topic of immense importance: digital transformation in Liberia. As we navigate the 21st century, technology has become the cornerstone of progress, and Liberia is no exception.”

According to him, digital transformation refers to integrating digital technologies into all aspects of an organization or society. It transcends mere adoption; it’s about reshaping processes, empowering citizens, and driving economic growth.

He noted that Liberia’s population reached 5.24 million in January 2022. However, only 22% of the population had internet access, a situation he said poses challenges as the digital divide persists, hindering progress in education, healthcare, and governance.

He said digitalization promises efficiency, innovation, and inclusivity and revealed that MTN has invested significantly in expanding network infrastructure through its commitment.

He added that MTN provides mobile services, enabling Liberians to access information, communicate, and participate in the digital economy.

De told the audience that MTN Mobile Money services empower citizens by providing financial services through mobile devices. Education and Health Initiatives: MTN supports educational programs and health services, leveraging technology for positive impact.

Liberia has embarked on a national digital transformation project. Through technology, the country aims to shape its future and transform lives.

Key sectors include education, healthcare, agriculture, and e-government says Mr. De.

“Embrace innovation, foster startups, and create an ecosystem that thrives on digital solutions,” disclosing that Liberia stands at the crossroads of opportunity. Digital transformation is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.

“Let’s rally behind MTN Liberia and other stakeholders to build a digitally empowered nation. Together, we can unlock Liberia’s potential and create a brighter future for all,” he concluded.

Earlier, LTA Acting Chairperson Mr. Abdullah Kamara noted that for developing countries like Liberia, digital transformation offers a multitude of opportunities to leapfrog traditional development barriers and accelerate progress, saying, “By embracing digital technologies in areas such as education, healthcare, governance, commerce, Liberia can overcome infrastructure limitations, improve service delivery and stimulate economic growth.” Editing by Jonathan Browne
