China to begin LBS expansion phase two project 

Following a 2006 Technical Assistance Agreement, Liberia and China handed over a renovated and fully equipped LBS facility to the Liberian government in November 2008.

Monrovia, March 29, 2024: The Government of the People’s Republic of China has disclosed its readiness to officially kick off phase two of the refurbishment of the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) expansion. 

The Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Mr. Yin Chengwu, disclosed the plan recently following a closed-door meeting with Liberian Information Minister Mr. Jerolinmek Matthew Piah.

In 2006, China entered into a Technical Assistance Agreement with the Government of Liberia, through which LBS’s refurbishment and expansion project phase one started in November 2007.

In November 2008, China handed over a renovated and fully- equipped LBS facility to the Liberian government. 

The cost of the LBS expansion Project was US$4 million. Its relay outstations in Bomi, Bong, Grand Bassa, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, and Maryland Counties were linked with the main studio in Monrovia through microwave satellite links, expanding the station’s coverage to many counties in Liberia.

Recently, Amb. Yin Chengwu announced his government’s readiness to commence phase two of the refurbishment and expansion project at the state-owned LBS.

According to him, the engineering team from China is expected to arrive in the country soon to begin the project officially. 

“The advance team is due in Liberia soon to work out modalities with the LBS management on the commencement of the project,” said Amb. Yin. 

Ambassador Yin noted, “The People’s Republic of China remains committed to supporting Liberia and upholding China-Liberia relations and the one-China Policy.”

For his part, Minister Piah, who chairs the LBS Board of Directors, expressed delight over China’s assistance to LBS and for also assisting the Government of Liberia (GOL) to adequately propagate its programs, activities, and achievements to the public.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the ONE CHINA POLICY, adding that China remains Liberia’s strategic partner.
