The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Yemen Dr. Ahmed Awad Bin Mubarak, who is in Mogadishu, together with his Somali counterpart, Abshir Omar Jama, laid the foundation stone for the new building of the Yemeni Embassy in Mogadishu.

The stone-laying was also witnessed by the Yemeni Ambassador to Somalia, Ambassador Fadal Al-Hanaq and some members of the Yemeni Diplomatic Mission in Mogadishu.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Yemen said that the construction of the first phase of the new embassy in Yemen is an important new sign towards the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries. The Yemeni embassy in Mogadishu was closed in September 2008.

The closure of the Yemeni embassy in Mogadishu was the reason for the security crisis between the interim government of President Abdullahi Yusuf and the opposing groups.

The Yemeni embassy was located near the Somali presidential palace.

Yemen was one of the first Arab states to open an embassy in Somalia, in 2007, since the collapse of the central government of Somalia. In 2016, Somalia closed its embassy in the city of Sana’a in Yemen, due to security concerns, as Somalia supported the government established in that country, while the city of Sana’a was controlled by the Houthis.
