New York, NY (March 16, 2023) – Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), will welcome the family of Tyre Nichols and Attorney Ben Crump to the House of Justice in Harlem.
The family will thank the NAN community for its continued support as they collectively fight for justice in this case.
Last month, Rev. Sharpton delivered the eulogy for the 29-year-old father – who was fatally beaten to death by Memphis police in January. The disturbing incident shook the nation, and renewed calls to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. The U.S. Department of Justice has also begun an examination of the Memphis Police Department. A Tennesse judge halted the release of more body camera footage, documents, and other evidence last week after a last-minute request by an attorney for one of the five cops charged with murdering Nichols. Rev. Sharpton condemned the decision, urging transparency in the investigation.
On Saturday, Rev. Sharpton will also recognize Fire Department Commissioner Lara Kavanagh at the House of Justice this Saturday as part of Women’s History Month. Last fall, Mayor Adams named Kavanagh to permanently lead the department – becoming the first woman to hold the position – after serving as acting Commissioner since February 2022. Kavanagh has focused on diversifying the department, which has historically lacked Black, Latino, and female members.
A rally starting at 9: 00 am from the NAN House of Justice, on 106 West 145th St in Harlem, is also scheduled.
