The ProAgro Project in collaboration with International Training Center (ITC), Turin, provided detailed virtual training on building a framework for integrated action and policy coherence for the realization of decent work through trade and investment in Ethiopia. The ILO MNE Declaration, a tripartite declaration of principles concerning multinational enterprises and social policy is the ILO instrument that provides direct guidance to enterprises on social policy and inclusive, responsible and sustainable workplace practices.

This training for investment professionals and other key holders of the project took place on 23-26 August 2021.

Representatives from Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), regional investment bureaus from Amhara and Sidama regions, Industrial Park Development Cooperation (IPDC) Amhara, Jobs Creation Commission (JCC), Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU) and Confederation of Ethiopian Employers Federations (CEEF) participated in the virtual training. The key contents of the course included: Corporate social responsibility and the promotion of responsible, sustainable business practices and investments, an introduction to the ILO MNE Declaration; aim and objectives, MNE Declaration in action in Ethiopia; practices and evidence, operational tools, a framework for action and other tools and initiatives to promote sustainable, inclusive and responsible business.

At the end of the training, the participants developed a road map, which included identification of country objectives in relation to the national policy framework and countries priorities; prioritization of principles of the MNE declaration related to the country objectives; and identification of major activities and entry points for the promotion of the MNE declaration. Finally, the participants of the training agreed on the need to have an MNE focal point for Ethiopia so that all the development plans are revisited from MNE declaration and principles perspectives.
