Well-known and leading Somali religious Scholar Sheikh Ali Warsame has passed away on Saturday morning, May 28 in Jordan according to family and relatives.

Warsame is not only known for his work as an Islamic scholar but also as one of the pioneers of the Al-Ittihad al-Islamiya group.

Al-Ittihad al-Islamiya is an Islamist militant group that had its roots in Somalia from 1992 to 2006.

Al-Ittihad al-Islamiya is considered a terrorist organisation by the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

It rose to power after the collapse of the military regime of President Siyad Barre in 1991 which led to decades of civil war.

The group is believed to have carried out a series of bomb attacks in public places in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in 1996 and 1997 as well as the kidnapping of dozens of aid workers in 1998.
