Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker injured, expected to be out for weeks

Ten Biggest Premier League Summer Transfer Deals Of 2018

Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker will be sidelined for the next few weeks. The Brazilian suffered a calf injury during Liverpool’s season opening victory against Norwich City over the weekend.

The 26-year-old Brazilian was forced to leave the pitch after only 39 minutes in his team’s eventual 4-1 victory in their first Premier League game of the season. It was a brilliant start for the current UEFA Champion’s League title holders. However, it is unfortunate that their star keeper will be sidelined for an unconfirmed amount of time.

“I don’t want to make now an exact prognosis on when he will be back – it takes a couple weeks for sure, and we have to see,” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

In an interview shared by the official Liverpool website, Klopp shared his optimism: “I saw already like ‘six weeks’ and stuff like this, but Ali was not a lot injured in his career so I would like to wait a little bit to see how he develops in that process now, but he is not in for the next few weeks.”

The injury is a sudden setback for the team, who are coming in fresh from a successful 2018/19 season. Alisson himself has just returned from helping Brazil win the Copa America over the summer.

Alisson’s injury has opened an opportunity for other players who are further down the Liverpool pecking order. After he left the playing field against Norwich, summer signing Adrian was called upon to debut for the team.

On Wednesday, Liverpool will be in Istanbul to play for the UEFA Super Cup title against Chelsea. Adrian is expected to start but Liverpool’s third-choice keeper, Caoimhin Kelleher may not yet be fully fit after a broken wrist injury.

Klopp confirmed that his team will have to look for a short-term solution in the form of Andy Lonergan. After leaving Middlesbrough during the summer, he is available on a free transfer. Luckily, the Reds know him well after having already relied on his services in the off-season.

Lonergan was called upon during the summer, before Alisson returned from international duty. “He was in with us, he’s a brilliant character, a really nice lad and helped us a lot in the pre-season and now we decided to work together with him,” said Klopp. He is expected to be on the bench on Wednesday.
