Arlington, VA – Signed today, the Presidential Determination announces that the admission of up to 30,000 refugees to the U.S. is justified by humanitarian concerns or is otherwise in the national interest. This is the lowest refugee admissions ceiling to be established since the beginning of the resettlement program. ECDC is concerned that the protection needs of the world’s displaced people are not being addressed as this will only provide a solution for a very small number of refugees. On the upside, the regional determination allocates 11,000 for Africa.

For 27 years, the Ethiopian Community Development Council, Inc. (ECDC) has been a proud partner of the U.S. Department of State’s Refugee Admissions program. In collaboration with its affiliates, ECDC has resettled over 50,000 refugees in Maryland, Virginia, Colorado, Texas, Nevada, North Carolina, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri, and Pennsylvania.

ECDC’s work in resettlement is inspired by its commitment to serve the vulnerable populations. The refugees we have resettled have become contributing members of American society, supporting their neighbors as nurses, social workers, teachers, accountants, entrepreneurs, and civil servants. We are proud of the impact that our organization has had in communities across America. Moreover, ECDC will continue to promote the well-being of immigrants and refugees around the world.

ECDC is one of nine resettlement agencies working in partnership with the Department of State and the Office of Refugee Resettlement to provide initial placement and support services to refugees being resettled in the United States. ECDC promotes cultural, educational and socio-economic development programs to assist refugees and immigrants in becoming productive members of their new homeland.
