The European Union has pledged a new era of cooperation with Somalia in the coming years.
The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles made the promise after holding phone talks with Somalia’s newly-elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The two leaders spoke on phone on Friday 20.
During the call, Fontelles also conveyed his congratulatory message to President Mohamud for clinching the Presidency in the recent presidential election held in the capital Mogadishu on May 15.
He said that Mohamud’s victory prevails the EU and Somalia a good opportunity to embark on a new era of cooperation.
They also discussed range of issues including National unity and development.
Fontelles, who also doubles up as the Vice President of the EU Commission (EUC), underscored the need for reforms and the security transition process with the new Somali leader.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to officially take over from outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo on Monday.
Mohamud defeated Farmaajo in the third round of voting after counting votes of 214 against Farmaajo’s 110.
This is the second time Mohamud is assuming the Presidency of the Horn of Africa Nation.
