The DA encourages all parents, teachers, school governing body (SGB) members, and communities to participate in Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill hearings this weekend (please see schedule below).

The DA has a number of concerns with the BELA Bill, which ultimately seeks to disempower schools and SGBs from determining their own admission and language policies, thereby endangering learners’ constitutional right to mother tongue education.

Objections and concerns raised at the public participation hearings in other provinces have indicated that communities have the same qualms as the DA about the draconian BELA Bill and its detrimental impact on South African education.

The DA will continue to do everything in our power to stop the ANC from bulldozing this harmful Bill through Parliament.
